Do you know what Open Enrollment is? Open enrollment allows Utah students to attend any public school in the state where space is available. You may have heard it being referred to as getting a "Special Permit."
If you've been thinking of moving your child to a different school, a good way to determine if it's a good fit is to simply visit the school. You can make an appointment with the principal or counselor and ask the questions you need to. In some cases, you may be allowed to observe a class there as well. We will post what to look for in an effective classroom at a later date. Early Open Enrollment begins Dec. 1st and ends the 3rd Friday in February. Some districts charge a one-time $5 processing fee when you apply. It is good to apply early as it is based on space availability.

State and local School Board elections are one of the best ways to be involved in your child's education. You may not be in a district that has candidates on the ballot, but you should look into all State elected officials, because when they are elected, they will make decisions that affect your child. Here are a few of the debates to watch, and decide if you should put you support behind a candidate. https://youtu.be/uyCbfhzc5Zc https://youtu.be/8XmXFXSiPEE You can also find who is on your ballot here: https://vote.utah.gov/vote/menu/index An easy way to get in some reading minutes for your kids is to listen to audio books. There are several sites that will provide these. You can google it or just check out your public library for free access to many books! They have books on cd and also some to download on-line. Many teachers will accept having a book read to your child as credible minutes because they are being exposed to rich vocabulary and literature. This is a good solution for slower readers as well. Just listen in the car and then ask them a few questions about what you've heard after you turn it off. Research has shown this is also a good way to boost comprehension. |
